My Approach

I am an emotion focused therapist, and my fundamental guiding theory is that mental illness is caused by experiencing overwhelming emotions in isolation. In other words, we go through traumatic things earlier in life without the proper support, and so our emotions get repressed and split off as a survival mechanism, and this causes a lot of inner turmoil and fear of emotion.  In therapy, we will work toward building a trusting relationship where you feel comfortable working through your fears and defenses and ultimately process those deeper emotions that had to be repressed earlier in life. Gradually, you will become more comfortable feeling and sharing your emotions, and your body and nervous system will come more into the present, leading to a higher quality of life and better relationships.

What To Expect

I work in the here and now, always inviting emotion into the room and into our relationship. Most importantly, I go at whatever pace feels right to you and have a great respect for trauma so I never will apply pressure to reveal something before you feel ready. You can expect that the first part of our work will delve into your past so I have an understanding of your emotional journey, and as the work goes on, we will bring the focus to the present and to our relationship, and to how your emotional patterns play out in the present day. I tend to be very real in session and not a distant therapist, I use self disclosure to show that you are not alone in what you're going through.

More About Me

I am a queer man living in San Francisco. I love the outdoors, being physically active, and my dog Sage. I received my masters at Columbia University and my training at the Kull Initiative for Psychotherapy and the LGBT Center of Manhattan. I have trained in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I also am developing a psychedelic practice and have received training through Polaris (Ketamine) and MAPS (MDMA).
